Why Pressing

Roughly 80 billion land animals and one to two trillion fish are killed for food each year, with the vast majority confined in industrial systems that impose severe and extended suffering. Per-capita meat consumption is still rising in middle-income countries, which means absolute numbers are projected to grow for decades unless alternatives succeed. Alternative proteins have shown technical viability but face funding and regulatory headwinds. Every year of delay locks in more animal suffering at enormous scale, and the marginal cost of reducing that suffering through corporate campaigns, legislation, and alt-protein funding remains unusually low compared with other moral priorities.

Scale

About 80 billion land animals are slaughtered annually, including roughly 74 billion chickens. A typical broiler chicken lives 35 to 42 days in crowded conditions bred for rapid growth. More than 95 percent of US farmed animals come from industrial operations. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing sector, with fish welfare largely unstudied and often neglected by regulation entirely.

Neglectedness

Farm animal welfare advocacy receives roughly 200 million dollars globally per year, against an animal agriculture industry generating over 1 trillion dollars in revenue. Most governments impose only minimal welfare standards and exempt farm animals from cruelty laws. Effective-altruism-adjacent funders dominate the space but remain small in absolute terms.

Tractability

Corporate cage-free and broiler-welfare campaigns have affected several hundred million hens and chickens, often at a cost well below 1 cent per animal-year improved. Alternative proteins are technically feasible and are becoming cost-competitive in some categories. Ballot measures such as California Proposition 12 and EU bans on cages demonstrate policy tractability.
